1. Urban Climate Film Festival

The National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) has partnered with the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, the French Development Agency (AFD), and the European Union to organize the first-ever Urban Climate Film Festival as part of the CITIIS program under U20 engagement events. The festival will feature a carefully selected collection of 11 films from 9 countries to increase public awareness of the effects of climate change on urban life and encourage discussion on sustainable urban development. On March 2023, the M.L. Bhartia Auditorium at Alliance Française in Lodhi Estate, New Delhi, will host the inauguration of the Urban Climate Film Festival.

2. Intel cofounder Gordon Moore passes away at 94

Gordon Moore, who helped start the company Intel in 1968 and predicted that computing power would continue to increase over time (known as “Moore’s Law”), has passed away at the age of 94. Moore was an important figure in the semiconductor industry and played a key role in putting Intel’s processors in most personal computers.

3. 26 % of world’s population does not have safe drinking water: UNESCO report

A report presented by UNESCO at the UN 2023 Water Conference in New York reveals that a significant portion of the world’s population still does not have access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation. The report indicates that 26% of the global population lacks safe drinking water, while 46% do not have access to well-managed sanitation facilities. It will be the second UN Conference dedicated to water after the one held in Mar del Plata, Argentina, in 1977.

4. Government Increases Raw Jute MSP by Rs 300 to Rs 5,050 per quintal

For the upcoming 2023-24 season, the Indian government has increased the minimum support price (MSP) for raw jute by Rs 300 to Rs 5,050 per quintal. The decision was taken during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and was based on the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP). The MSP of Raw Jute (TD-3 equivalent to earlier TD-5 grade) has been fixed at Rs 5,050 per quintal for the upcoming season.

5. Cabinet sanctions focused subsidy for beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has announced an extension of the subsidy of Rs 200 per LPG cylinder under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) for one year. The PMUY was launched in May 2016 by the Central government to provide deposit-free LPG connections to adult women of poor households and make LPG accessible to rural and impoverished households. The government credits the subsidy directly to the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries.

6. Salima Tete appointed as the AHF Athletes Ambassador

National women’s hockey team midfielder Salima Tete has appointed the AHF Athletes Ambassador from India for a term of two years. Tete accepted the certificate and the position during the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) Congress in Mungyeong, Korea. Tete, who led the Indian women’s junior hockey team to a fourth-place finish at the 2021 FIH Women’s Junior World Cup in Potchefstroom, South Africa, is among four players from Asia to be appointed for the position.

7. Finance Bill 2023 passed in Lok Sabha

The Lok Sabha passed the Finance Bill 2023, which implements tax proposals for the upcoming fiscal year, without any discussion. The passage of the Bill occurred amid Opposition uproar over the Adani controversy. Proposals for a total of 64 official amendments were put forward in the Bill, including one that aims to eliminate long-term tax benefits for specific categories of debt mutual funds and another that calls for the establishment of the GST Appellate Tribunal.

लोकसभा ने बिना किसी चर्चा के आगामी वित्तीय वर्ष के लिए कर प्रस्तावों को लागू करने वाले वित्त विधेयक 2023 को पारित कर दिया। अडानी विवाद पर विपक्ष के हंगामे के बीच विधेयक पारित हुआ। बिल में कुल 64 आधिकारिक संशोधनों के प्रस्ताव रखे गए थे, जिनमें से एक का उद्देश्य ऋण म्युचुअल फंड की विशिष्ट श्रेणियों के लिए दीर्घकालिक कर लाभ को समाप्त करना है और दूसरा जो जीएसटी अपीलीय न्यायाधिकरण की स्थापना की मांग करता है।
