Karim Benzema won the men’s Ballon d’Or for the first time on Monday after a brilliant season with Real Madrid capped by the Champions League and Spanish league titles. The 34-year-old Benzema had his best season ever at Madrid, being the top scorer in both leagues. He scored 44 times with Madrid, including 15 in Europe’s top competition, and equaled Raúl González as the club’s second-highest scorer behind Cristiano Ronaldo.

India’s internet freedom improves after 4 years: Following initiatives to close the digital divide in the nation, India’s internet freedom score increased by two points to 51 in the overall ranking, according to the US government-funded NGO Freedom House. Reduced frequency and intensity of nationwide internet outages also contributed to the score improvement. In terms of internet freedom, India scored 49 in 2021.

Though India is considered to be the second largest fish producer in the world, it is still way behind its nearest competitor China, said a fisheries scientist. “India is the second largest producer of freshwater fish in the world, but compared to China our fish production is only about ten per cent of that country,” Pro Vice- Chancellor of Kerala University of Fisheries & Ocean Studies Prof C Mohanakumaran Nair told PTI.

The 2023 Asian Cup football tournament will be held in Qatar, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced after China withdrew earlier this year because of its “zero-COVID” policy. The Asian Cup is held every four years. Qatar won the tournament’s last edition, which was hosted by the United Arab Emirates in 2019. This is the third time Qatar will be hosting the tournament, having staged it in 1988 and 2011. In June 2019, China was named host for the 2023 event but they withdrew in May this year, leaving the AFC scrambling to find a new host for its flagship men’s 24-team football tournament.
