Monitored populations of vertebrates (mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish) have seen a devastating 69% drop on average since 1970, according to World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) Living Planet Report 2022. Populations in Latin America and the Caribbean have fared worst, with an average decline of 94%. Global freshwater species have also been disproportionately impacted, declining 83% on average.

The Iraqi Parliament chose Kurdish politician, Abdul Latif Rashid to lead the country. Rashid won more than 160 votes against 99 for the incumbent Saleh. Rashid, 78, is a British-educated engineer and was the Iraqi minister of water resources from 2003-2010. Outgoing President Saleh reportedly walked out of the parliament building as the votes were tallied.

The 12th edition of Defence Expo has started in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Addressing the curtain raiser press conference in Gandhinagar yesterday, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh said, DefExpo 2022 will showcase the growing prowess of the domestic defence industry. The theme of this year’s event is ‘Path to Pride’. With record registration of 1,340 companies, DefExpo 2022 is set to be the biggest Indian defence exhibition till date. It is also the first-ever edition of the event to exclusively feature Indian companies.

डिफेंस एक्सपो का 12वां संस्करण गुजरात के गांधीनगर में शुरू हो गया है। कल गांधीनगर में प्रेस कॉन्फ्रेंस को संबोधित करते हुए रक्षा मंत्री श्री राजनाथ सिंह ने कहा, डेफएक्सपो 2022 घरेलू रक्षा उद्योग के बढ़ते कौशल को प्रदर्शित करेगा। इस वर्ष के आयोजन का विषय ‘पथ से गौरव’ है। 1,340 कंपनियों के रिकॉर्ड पंजीकरण के साथ, डेफएक्सपो 2022 अब तक की सबसे बड़ी भारतीय रक्षा प्रदर्शनी होगी। यह विशेष रूप से भारतीय कंपनियों को प्रदर्शित करने वाले इस आयोजन का पहला संस्करण भी है।

The city of Hyderabad has bagged the prestigious ‘World Green City Award 2022’ beating Paris, Bogota, Mexico City, Montreal, and Fortaleza in Brazil. Additionally, the city has also won ‘Living Green for Economic Recovery and Inclusive Growth’ at the International Association of Horticulture Producers (AIPH) 2022 held in Jeju, South Korea. Hyderabad is the only Indian city that was selected for the ‘World Green City 2022,’ award, the best across all six categories.

Haryana has bagged the top position in the category of big states in the Public Affairs Index-2022. The state has emerged at the forefront in social, economic and political justice themes. It has topped among the major states with a score of 0.6948, followed by Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Punjab and Karnataka among many other states.

Times Higher Education Rankings 2023 has been announced. This year, the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore has secured the top place among Indian universities. Five Indian universities made it into the world’s top 500 varsities. IISc has been placed under the 251-300 bracket. The complete list of the top 10 Indian Universities is enlisted below.

Scientists on a mission in the Maldives have discovered a new ecosystem 500 meters deep in the ocean. The discovery is expected to result in enhanced safeguards for the marine life and fisheries in this special region, according to a press release published on Tuesday by Nekton. Nekton is a non-profit research foundation and a charity registered in the U.K. that was founded to accelerate ocean scientific research and ocean conservation.

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is marked every year on October 17. It is a day to raise awareness about the global issue of poverty and how it is a violation of human rights and of human dignity. The day also honours the courage of people living in poverty and their everyday struggles.
