1. Finland Becomes 31st NATO Member After Turkey’s Approval

Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), has announced that Finland has become the 31st member of the alliance, thanks to Turkey’s unanimous vote. Despite Russia’s opposition to Finland’s membership, Turkey’s approval has allowed the extension of NATO. Finland shares a long border of over 1,300 kilometers with Russia, and its decision to join NATO was prompted by security concerns following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. However, Sweden’s application to join NATO has been declined by Turkey and Hungary.

उत्तरी अटलांटिक संधि संगठन (NATO) के महासचिव जेन्स स्टोलटेनबर्ग ने घोषणा की है कि तुर्की के सर्वसम्मत वोट की बदौलत फ़िनलैंड गठबंधन का 31वां सदस्य बन गया है। फ़िनलैंड की सदस्यता के लिए रूस के विरोध के बावजूद, तुर्की की स्वीकृति ने नाटो के विस्तार की अनुमति दी है। फ़िनलैंड रूस के साथ 1,300 किलोमीटर से अधिक की लंबी सीमा साझा करता है, और नाटो में शामिल होने का उसका निर्णय 2022 में यूक्रेन पर रूस के आक्रमण के बाद सुरक्षा चिंताओं से प्रेरित था। हालाँकि, नाटो में शामिल होने के स्वीडन के आवेदन को तुर्की और हंगरी द्वारा अस्वीकार कर दिया गया है।

2. Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra tea gets European GI tag

The European Commission (EC) has awarded protected geographical indication (PGI) status to Kangra tea, a unique variety of tea grown in the Kangra district of India’s Himachal Pradesh. The PGI will be effective from April 11, 2023, as per the notification issued by the EC on March 22. This move comes at a time when the EC has been delaying granting a similar status to Basmati rice, for which India applied in 2018. However, the EU wants India and Pakistan to hold discussions so that Basmati rice from Pakistan can also be recognized, but Pakistan is currently not meeting the necessary requirements for the recognition.

• हिमाचल प्रदेश की कांगड़ा चाय को यूरोपीय जीआई टैग मिला

यूरोपीय आयोग (ईसी) ने भारत के हिमाचल प्रदेश के कांगड़ा जिले में उगाई जाने वाली चाय की एक अनूठी किस्म कांगड़ा चाय को संरक्षित भौगोलिक संकेत (पीजीआई) का दर्जा दिया है। चुनाव आयोग द्वारा 22 मार्च को जारी अधिसूचना के अनुसार पीजीआई 11 अप्रैल, 2023 से प्रभावी होगा। यह कदम ऐसे समय में आया है जब चुनाव आयोग बासमती चावल को समान दर्जा देने में देरी कर रहा है, जिसके लिए भारत ने 2018 में आवेदन किया था। हालाँकि, यूरोपीय संघ चाहता है कि भारत और पाकिस्तान चर्चा करें ताकि पाकिस्तान के बासमती चावल को भी मान्यता दी जा सके, लेकिन पाकिस्तान वर्तमान में मान्यता के लिए आवश्यक आवश्यकताओं को पूरा नहीं कर रहा है।

3. Haryana becomes first state in India to have 100% electrified railway network

The railway network in the state of Haryana in India was completely electrified by Indian Railways, making it the first state in the country to achieve 100% electrification of its railway network. The existing Broad Gauge network of Haryana is 1,701 Route kilometre, which is now 100% electrified, resulting in saving on account of reduced line haul cost (about 2.5 times lower), heavier haulage capacity, increased sectional capacity, reduced operating & maintenance cost of electric loco, energy efficient and eco-friendly mode of transportation with reduced dependence on imported crude oil, saving of foreign exchange.

4. India’s forex reserves rise $5.98 billion to $578.78 billion

According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), India’s foreign exchange reserves have continued to increase for the second consecutive week, reaching USD 578.778 billion in the week ending March 24. This indicates a rise of USD 5.978 billion in the week. In the previous week, the forex reserves had gone up by USD 12.8 billion, bringing the total forex reserves to USD 572.8 billion. The increase in reserves is mainly attributed to the rise in foreign currency assets, which surged by USD 6.48 billion to USD 536.99 billion in the week ended March 24.

भारतीय रिजर्व बैंक (RBI) के अनुसार, भारत के विदेशी मुद्रा भंडार में लगातार दूसरे सप्ताह वृद्धि जारी है, जो 24 मार्च को सप्ताह में 578.778 बिलियन अमेरिकी डॉलर तक पहुंच गया है। यह सप्ताह में 5.978 बिलियन अमेरिकी डॉलर की वृद्धि का संकेत देता है। पिछले सप्ताह में, विदेशी मुद्रा भंडार 12.8 बिलियन अमरीकी डॉलर बढ़ गया था, जिससे कुल विदेशी मुद्रा भंडार 572.8 बिलियन अमरीकी डॉलर हो गया था। भंडार में वृद्धि मुख्य रूप से विदेशी मुद्रा आस्तियों में वृद्धि के लिए जिम्मेदार है, जो 24 मार्च को समाप्त सप्ताह में 6.48 बिलियन अमरीकी डॉलर बढ़कर 536.99 बिलियन अमरीकी डॉलर हो गई।

5. Fiscal deficit till February hits 83 per cent of FY23 target at Rs 14.5 lakh crore

The Controller General of Accounts (CGA) released data indicating that the central government’s fiscal deficit reached 82.8% of the full-year target at the end of February. The fiscal deficit represents the gap between the government’s expenditure and revenue collection during the April-February period, and it amounted to Rs 14.53 lakh crore in actual terms.

6. India current account deficit narrows to 2.2% of GDP in Q3

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released data showing that India’s current account deficit, an important measure of the balance of payments, has decreased to $18.2 billion, which is equivalent to 2.2% of the GDP, during the December quarter of the current fiscal year. This decrease can be attributed to the reduction in the merchandise trade deficit, which stood at $30.9 billion, or 3.7% of the GDP in the second quarter of the fiscal year 2022-23. As per the RBI, during the second quarter of the previous fiscal year, the Current Account Deficit (CAD) was $30.9 billion, which is equivalent to 3.7% of the GDP.

7. New foreign trade policy released, target to reach two trillion dollars by 2030

The government introduced the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023, which aims to increase the country’s exports to USD 2 trillion by 2030. The new policy is different from the previous 5-year FTP announcements as it has no specific end date and will be revised as needed, according to the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Santosh Sarangi. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal presented FTP 2023, which will be implemented starting from April, 2023, and emphasizes a shift from incentive-based approaches to remission and entitlement-based measures.

• नई विदेश व्यापार नीति जारी, 2030 तक दो ट्रिलियन डॉलर तक पहुंचने का लक्ष्य

8. Rajib K Mishra takes over as CMD of PTC India

Rajib Kumar Mishra, who is currently the acting chairman of PTC India or formerly Power Trading Corporation of India Limited, has been given a permanent role in the company, despite facing regulatory issues related to its subsidiary, PTC India Financial Services Ltd. Mishra has extensive experience in the power sector and holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Aligarh Muslim University. He was also awarded the status of Visiting Scholar by the University of Texas, Austin, in 2008 for his post-doctoral research.
